5 Tips on How to Maintain a Good Yard

Tired of dealing with brown grass? Here are a few things that you can do to make it green again!

1. Don’t Overwater

Overwatering the lawn can drown the roots; this can cause bare or yellow spots. Instead of watering every day, water deeply and less frequently.

Another thing to remember is that grass requires less water in the fall and spring compared to the summer—so keep that in mind when you’re watering the lawn!

2. Cut at the Right Height

Believe it or not but the height at which you cut the grass matters. Generally speaking, you want to aim for around 3”.

Any more and you’ll be doing more harm than good. In fact, you should never cut more than 1/3rd of the total height as that’ll weaken the grass, causing it to become more susceptible to disease.

3. Aerate in the Spring and Fall

It’s important to aerate your lawn in the spring and fall. As it is, the easiest way to do this is with a spike aerator. Basically, it’s a tool that allows you to poke holes into the ground.

Not only will this give the roots more space to grow, but it’ll also allow for water and nutrients to penetrate the soil.

4. Mow Properly

When it comes to mowing, you always want to do it in different directions. Why? Mowing in the same pattern can cause the grass to lean in one direction.

Another thing is that you want to make sure that the mower blades are sharp. If you cut with a dull blade, it can tear the grass off, which can cause it to turn brown.

5. Reseed Bare Patches

Consider filling in bare patches with grass seed. To do that, you want to first loosen the soil with a rake. Once you’ve done that, sprinkle grass seeds evenly across the surface.

If necessary, you can always place netting over the seeded area—that’ll prevent birds from eating the seeds.

For those who are planning on installing new sod, it’s best to hire a professional such as ISR Gardening Inc.
