Our skin has three main functions—protection, sensation, and thermoregulation. It also happens to be the largest organ of the human body!
At the same time, however, it’s quite delicate. For one thing, it can be affected by a number of things from allergies to sunlight.
Fortunately, there are steps that you can take to protect your skin. For instance, it’s important to keep it hydrated by applying moisturizer. Sunscreen is also essential if you’ll be going outside.
What about the don’ts? What shouldn’t you do when it comes to your skin?
Want to know? If so, be sure to read on—we’ll be going over some of the most common mistakes with skincare below!
5 Things That Can Harm Your Skin
Certain things can have a negative impact on your skin. Here’s what you need to know.
1. Cleaning Your Face Too Often
Washing your face too often can lead to dry, irritated skin—that is, it will strip the top layer of oil that’s on the skin.
That’s not all. This stripping of oil can actually cause the skin to paradoxically produce more oil, which can lead to breakouts.
Considering that, you don’t want to wash your face more than you need to (twice a day).
2. Overexfoliating
Regular exfoliation can help clear out the pores. Too much of it, however, can actually damage your skin.
Symptoms of over-exfoliation include redness, flaking, and peeling. To help calm the irritation, you can apply a cold compress to the skin.
3. Not Moisturizing Right Away
It’s important that you moisturize your skin immediately after cleansing. Leave your skin bare for more than 60 seconds and it will start to dry out.
For the best results, we recommend using an alcohol-free toner before applying your moisturizer.
4. Using the Wrong Products
Make sure that the products you’re using are suited for your skin type. For example, it’s probably a good idea to use something extra moisturizing if you have dry skin.
Similarly, you want to be careful about the ingredients if you have sensitive skin. Try to pick something that’s free of chemicals and fragrance such as those by Prolong Lash.
5. Sleeping With Makeup On
Never sleep with your makeup on—it can block your oil and sweat glands. In other words, it can lead to breakouts.
Not only that, but eye makeup can actually end up inside your eyes while you’re sleeping. This can lead to eyelid dermatitis and conjunctivitis, the latter of which will turn the eye a pink or red color.
