Did you know that one of the top sellers for perfumes is 94 years old?

When you’re in the store, you might notice the perfume section and walk by taking in the different scents. You might struggle with picking out the right fragrance.

In this article, you’ll learn exactly how to pick out the right perfume for you, and learn about the different options out there. Read on to be able to answer the question, what type of perfume should I wear?

Do Research

When you’re asking yourself, what type of perfume should I wear, you should first research different perfumes and fragrances. What scents do you love in your everyday life?

What scent do you use for products such as your shampoo, conditioner, body wash, etc.? How about what scent do you like for your clothes?

Whatever scent you like, make sure to make a note of it. Some examples of scents can be fresh laundry, lavender, pine, etc. You can find out more and research about different scents online.

As you’re researching different scents, think about current perfumes you have — what is the best perfume? Also, think about your current lifestyle, too. If you’re not going to wear your perfume much, it might be okay to spend a little more on the perfect scented fragrance for you.

Think about your work environment, and how your coworkers will feel with different scents. Try to avoid stronger scents such as citrus or florals. Instead, choose a spice or woodsy option.

Think about how strong you’d prefer it to be. Do you want everyone who walks by to notice it, or do you want something a bit more subtle?

Choosing Your Scent

There are different notes in both cologne and perfume, which will impact the scent. In the different layers, you’ll have the base, middle, and top notes. When these scents combine, that’s what gives it the overall scent.

Different Scents

There are four main categories for scents, which include fresh, woody, oriental, and floral. Each option has subfamilies as well.

Oriental

This has exotic scents such as herbs and spices. They can be softer, as well, with sweet or amber notes mixed in with the spice.

The subfamilies include woody oriental, oriental, and soft oriental. Woody notes will have sandalwood and patchouli with sweet and spicy notes.

Oriental will have warmer notes such as musk, vanilla, and cinnamon. Soft oriental will have floral notes mixed with warm spices.

Fresh

Fresh fragrances are crisp, clean, and citrusy. They can include cucumbers, saltwater, grass, and lemons. They’re a great option during the summertime.

Woody

These perfumes are warm with sandalwood and patchouli mixed with cedar. Sometimes they’ll have a floral or citrus note included.

The subfamilies include dry woods, woods, and mossy woods. Dry woods are smoky with leather scents.

Woods are a mix of sandalwood or cedarwood. Mossy woods are earthy and smooth, and sweet scents include amber or oakmoss.

Floral

Floral fragrances are fruity, flowery, and regal. These scents can have gardenia, orange blossom, lavender, rose, and lilac. These are a great choice when you’re looking for something more romantic.

Other Scents

While there are four primary scents, there are other scents as well. One such scent is what’s known as aromatic. Aromatic scents have spices and herbs that are used in cooking.

For example, it can have mint, chamomile, thyme, rosemary, etc. Some call it herbal to avoid confusion in the culinary community.

How to Tell the Difference Between the Notes

When you first spray perfume, the scent you notice is the top note. You’ll notice that scent fades after about 15 minutes. At this point, you’ll smell the middle note.

The middle note’s scent will last for a few hours. Once the middle fades away, then you have the bottom note. These are the heavier scents that you notice lasting throughout the day.

Eau De Parfum vs Parfum

Each fragrance will have a quantity level. The higher a concentration, the less alcohol it has, and the more perfume it contains.

The options are eau de toilette, eau de cologne, eau fraiche, eau de parfum, and parfum.

The highest amount of oil can be found in eau de parfum and parfum. Parfum is the highest concentration of oil. After parfum and eau de parfum, is eau de toilette.

Eau de toilette costs less than eau de parfum and is a popular option. Eau de cologne is a lower concentration and has more alcohol. Since it’s a lower concentration, the scent only lasts a couple of hours.

Test It Out

When you’re ready to try out different perfumes, you can head to the store. You can smell the perfume from the bottle, but this won’t give you an idea of how it’ll smell on your body.

Instead of spraying it onto a piece of paper, try it out on yourself. Each person has different pheromones, which can change the scent of the perfume.

Spray a small amount on your wrist or arm. After it has had time to seep in for a few minutes, smell your arm. While shopping in the store is the best option, you can also shop online, and go by what scents you enjoy in your other products.

When you test it out, never rub it into your skin. When you rub, this causes the molecules to break down faster due to heat. If you don’t want to spend all day in the store, ask if they have sample bottles that you can bring home and try.
