We all know it. We all wear it. Denim. But do you know how to wear denim dress? It’s not such a tricky part. It’s rather simple: you can wear denim from sport and casual to slightly edgy with a touch of elegance. I’m still trying to wrap my head around that denim could be worn to an elegant party. But I’m not quite sure that this can actually be possible. I think I’ll stick to my idea that denim is not the most appropriate fashion choice when it comes to extravagant events.

We’ll just have to wait and see what the future brings…

What Is Denim?

Over the years, denim became more than just a cotton fabric“Denim is one of the world’s oldest fabrics, yet it remains eternally young” states American Fabrics magazine, in 1969. That’s because, over the years, denim hasn’t gone once under the radar and off the runways. It was always present, one way or another. It was constantly used and designers have always shown interest in it because it’s a versatile fabric.

In its raw form, denim is rigid and has a more dark color (indigo). After being worn a couple of time, this fabric gives a more relaxing fit and comes to a faded color. But this takes some time. Modern industries have come up with several methods that speed up this process:

  • bleaching, acid, dyechemical treatment methods

  • stone wash, distressing, dirty wash, vintage – mechanical treatment methods

“From the 17th century to the present, denim has been woven, used and discarded; made into upholstery, pants, and awnings; found in museums, attics, antique stores and archaeological digs; worn as the fabric of hard honest work, and as the expression of angry rebellion; used for the sails of Columbus’ ships in legend; and worn by American cowboys in fact.” (A Short History Of Denim)

Why Do We Love Denim So Much?

We often wonder what to wear. And when I say “often”, I actually mean “a few times a day”. What’s the most simple answer that pops to our heads? Denim. A pair of denim trousers. Maybe a denim shirt, skirt or jacket. Sometimes even a denim dress. Why? The answer to this question is more than obvious.

Denim has no season. You can wear it in spring, summer, autumn and winter. It never gets old. However, our appreciation for denim is rather limited to mainly trousers. It’s the handiest fashion item we got and surely we’re not going to forget them so easily.

How To Wear Denim Dress

A denim dress is one of the many ways we can wear denim and not actually be trousers. A denim dress is a cool alternative to denim trousers and looks great if you accessorize it with sneakers, flat sandals, platform shoes, heels or boots.

Embrace the denim shirt dress

The denim shirt dress has become a cool alternative to wearing denim because you can wear it even with a pair of over-the-knee boots or just flat sandals. You can make it look stylish if you wear it everywhere, even at the office.

Denim Western Dress

Here is one simple way to wear a denim shirt dress for a day at the office or just a walk with friends.  For that western look, don’t forget your ankle boots and the fringe shoulder bag.

Denim Shirtdress

Another cool look for a day at the office is to mix a light colored denim shirt dress with a pair of flat and comfortable sandals. Maybe a slim belt to emphasize your waist isn’t such a bad idea.

Love a cut-out dress?

Cut-Out Denim Dress

Be romantic and wear a sleeveless cut-out bleached-out blue wash denim dress. I wouldn’t take this dress to work, but I would take it for shopping or out for a desert/movie. It’s cute and looks cool with platform espadrilles.

The new alternative

A sexy version for a denim dress. Definitely wear a pair of heels with this one. And I wouldn’t wear it in the daytime. It’s too sexy for this. Go out for a cocktail with your girlfriends and wear it.

Try the denim printed dress

Print Denim Dress

“Step into summer in a cute denim dress patterned with a cool geo print and finished with crisscrossing straps across the open back. A sweetheart neckline and flared skirt complete the adorable warm-weather look.” It’s a beautiful dress for summer and gives even more that summer vibe if combined with white platform sandals. The perfect touch.

What about a patchwork denim dress?

If you really love denim, but can’t decide what denim color is your favorite, I would suggest you try a denim patchwork dress. It’s got patches of different denim colors and looks kinda funky accessorized with platforms and a pair of colorful shades. Also, a white T-shirt or maybe a printed one will give an extra touch to this outfit.

Or maybe a white denim dress?

If white is your choice of color, check out this white denim dress looking all rock and roll with these black ankle boots. I especially like the fact that it has raw cut edges. Really hot! It also gives a boho vibe, so you can add a straw hat and some flash tattoos. You will inspire others.

Ombre denim dress

Who said denim comes only in tones of blue? Because of today’s industries, denim can now be dyed and transformed in various colors. This dress right here is ombre and I love the colors and the raw edges. So, get your heels on, because this is one stylish outfit!

I don’t know about you, but these beautiful denim dresses have really put the denim trousers on a second place, especially in the spring and summer. I love wearing dresses and a denim dress is a perfect choice. Get inspired and don’t forget: there are always other alternatives if you’re bored with trousers. You just have to look for them!

Refinery 29 makes a strong conclusion regarding denim: “Denim is working overtime for that most-versatile-material crown.”
