With teenagers spending more than $600 to go to their school’s proms, it’s clear that many consider this to be the highlight of their high school career.
This makes sense — after all, what other night can you get all dolled up and be escorted to a high-class event feeling like a princess (or prince)?
Though prom is exciting, it also can be stressful, especially when you don’t prepare adequately. That’s why we’re here today to give you some tips on getting ready for prom.
Read on to make sure that your night to remember is as well planned out as it possibly can be!
1. Plan and Talk
Once the stress of your promposal is over, you’re going to want to sit down with your date and discuss expectations.
Who is going to be picking who up the night of prom? Will there be a photoshoot at any given location? Are you guys going to after-parties? There’s so much to talk about.
You’ll also want to talk to your friends about who is going to be in your prom group. This means figuring out who is going to be sitting at your table. Choose people that you want to share the night with.
2. Fill Out Your School’s Paperwork
The next thing you’ll need to do is fill out the paperwork that your school requires. There are likely a few forms that you’ll need to fill out.
The first and most important one is the form that states that you and your date will be going (and going together.) When you turn this in, you’ll also need to enclose the ticket fee.
There will also be forms about what food you want to be served at prom and where you want to sit. Make sure that you read all the directions carefully while filling out the paperwork.
3. Choose Your Outfit
Once you’ve talked to your date and taken care of logistics, the fun can begin in the form of choosing your outfit!
If you’re a guy, make sure that you get an outfit that goes with whatever colors and styles your date is wearing. This only takes about thirty seconds to ask about and will prevent clashing and awkward stares while you hit the dance floor. Besides that, a nice tailored suit will do the trick.
If you’re a girl, you have a little more work cut out for you. But don’t worry — it’s fun work!
Start by choosing your dress. Pick the color you’ve always dreamed of wearing on this big night and a style that flatters your figure. This is the perfect excuse for a shopping trip with your girls, and they can help you to figure out what dresses look best on you.
Next, you’re going to want to pick out some shoes to match. Make sure that they go well with your dress, but also that they’re comfy enough to dance in. Heels can look great, but they aren’t worth not enjoying your prom for! Nice flats may be the way to go.
4. Accessorize Appropriately
If you’re a guy, you’re likely making a face right now, but you do need to accessorize your outfit.
Your tie is one such accessory. Make sure that it’s the same color (or at least a close match) to the clothes that your date is wearing. Also, make sure that your belt matches your tie and jacket. It will look weird otherwise.
Ladies, you’ll also want to make sure that you get underwear that flatters your dress. You’ll also want to pick out some gorgeous jewelry that goes with your outfit.
For both sexes, your prom is a big event that you’re going to want to get your hair professionally styled for. Research styles online (alone or with friends) and find those that flatter your face shape and personal style. Make sure to print these out and bring them to the stylist with you!
5. Get the Flowers
Flowers are the key to any prom. Corsages, boutineers, the works- all these are concepts you’ll need to understand if you want to look your best on prom night.
A boutineer is the small floral pin that a guy wears on his breast or on the collar of his suit. This is intended to go with the corsage of his female date or the boutineer of his male one. A corsage is the flower that a girl wears around her wrist on prom night. Generally, it matches the boutineer of her male date or the corsage of her female one.
Pick a favorite flower or one that means something to you. If you gave your date a specific kind of flower for your first date, for example, that may be something to break out again.
You’ll want to talk about what flowers you’re getting ahead of time so that you can both wear something that flatters you. Order the flowers from a florist together, sit back, and wait for the fresh floral cuts.
6. Hire a Limo
Finally, you’re going to want to rent limo services so that you can arrive at your school’s prom in style.
This can get expensive, so it’s tempting to blow off, but you really shouldn’t do that. If you don’t make your prom night perfect, you’re going to regret it. Not only that, but it’s affordable if you look in the right places.
Save up some money for a limo as soon as you know that you’re headed to prom. Think about asking parents for the limo as a graduation gift or an early/late birthday present. It’s 100% worth the sacrifice, we guarantee you.
