So, you’ve finally finished decorating the dining room of your dreams — well, almost.
You’ve hung the curtains, chosen an incredible wallpaper, and have even found a stunning rug that will also hide your crumbs!
There’s only one thing left to do: find your dream dining table.
But in addition to things like textures, colors, and style of design, there’s one other aspect that you need to take into consideration.
What is it?
The size of your dining table.
There are quite a few things that you’ll need to take into consideration to ensure that your table is just right for your new space.
What are they?
Read on to find out.
The Number Of People
The first thing that you should consider when you’re ready to purchase a dining table?
The average number of people that you expect to be sitting at it.
In general, most people will need a table that’s about 36 inches wide. This type of length will allow for both comfortable place settings, as well as leaving you enough room for your serving pieces.
Of course, you’ll also need to take into consideration the shape of the table when it comes to the number of people you’d like to seat.
In general, if you’re interested in purchasing a round table, then you’ll need a table that’s between 34-36 inches in diameter. This means that each person will be allotted about 9 inches of space.
If you want a rectangular table, we suggest looking for tables that are about 48 inches long if you need to seat four people, meaning that each person sitting there will take up about 12 inches of space.
If you’re interested in a square dining table, you can go anywhere from 36-44 inches in width. This means that each person will have about 10 inches of space.
Keep in mind that not all tables are suitable for larger parties.
If you’re maxing out at four people, then you can get away with a square or circular table. However, square and circular tables are not suited for more than four people in most cases.
Other Important Measurements
Of course, there are things other than the number of people and general type of table that you need to take into consideration when you’re trying to find the right size for your dining room table.
The last thing you want to deal with every time you sit down for a meal is a space that looks overcrowded or is simply uncomfortable.
The Room Itself
First of all, begin by taking the measurements of your dining room as a whole. This will help you to get a better understanding of what kind of size will work for you, and what will end up being too overwhelming.
If at all possible, we strongly suggest placing your other furniture in your dining room beforehand. This way, you won’t accidentally end up purchasing a table that’s too big.
How Much Space Between…
When it comes to determining how much space to leave between your dining table and other things in your dining room, there are two main measurements you’ll need to take.
The first one?
The space between your actual walls and the edges of the table that you’re considering purchasing. For best results, we suggest leaving about 45 inches of space between your walls and your tables.
When people get up from their seats, you don’t want them to collide with the wall behind them! Plus, a lack of space could make serving guests, even when seated, extremely challenging.
In fact, it’s one of the biggest decorating mistakes out there! Measuring will help you to avoid a fiasco — one that could embarrass some of your guests.
The second measurement that you’ll need to take?
The space between any furniture and three-dimensional wall decor that’s already in your space and the end of what the table would be.
Just as you would with the space between the table and the wall, anywhere between 45-48 inches will leave you a nice amount of wiggle room.
Our Favorite New Style Of Table
Now that you know how to properly measure your dining table size, let’s take a couple of quick moments to discuss the best options for your style.
One of our favorite trends of 2018?
Tables that don’t have smooth edges, but instead are sourced from beautiful, natural pieces of wood. This is known as a “living edge” table because it is cut across the entire length of the tree trunk — not just the smooth center part.
Not only are live edge tables incredibly beautiful and unique, they’re also a much more environmentally-friendly option.
Especially if you’re going with a more minimalist, natural theme, you can’t go wrong with these stunning statement pieces.
