Fashion Fairy Tales Throughout History

As girls, I am sure all of you loved listening to fairy tales when we were little. I know I did! I vividly remember the enchanting world of magical far away kingdoms, beautiful princes and princesses. My imagination drew enticing pictures of ridiculously beautiful places in my mind. Somehow, I could not help but feel, that this made up world of fairy tale goes hand in hand with fashion.

If you think about it, it is one of the most obvious and logical connections if fashion and magic can be logical. And I do belive that fashion is the closest thing we have to magic. Every editorial spread or runaway show, takes us on a trip to a different fairy tale land, whether it is in the classical princess-like manner or folklore ethnic -like way, whether it is to a futuristic avant garde land or to a darker and more twisted couture reality.

# Dior Fashion Fairy tales

First stop is Dior. The fashion house signature is the magical settings of their shows. Especially during John Galliano‘s reign. Every runaway told a different story. Undoubtably, there is no one better, to turn fairy tales into reality than Dior. Not to mention that every garment and look on its own is like a character from a tale. We can go ten years back and it is still as enchantingly beautiful and relevant. Dior got one thing right – fairy tales are timeless. Let’s take a look!

The year is 2004 and it is the Fall Couture show. It is the peak of Galliano’s creative genius and I feel like he had taken us to Wonderland with Alice and we are about to meet the Queen of Hearts!

Of course, alongside with the Queen of Hearts we meet her darker sister the magnificent Queen of Spades.

We jump back to Egyptian times for the 2004 Spring Couture collection. What can be more mystical and mysterious than ancient Egypt? The emperor’s masks are a pretty obvious way to go, however if you look past them, the garments carry the distinctive Egyptian feel for gold and glory without being too literal.

Gold is not the only colour who can take us to the ancient times and Dior and Galliano prove it like no one else.

This time, we jump ahead to 2008 Spring Couture show. Dior is taking us to an eastern dream land inspired of geishas and samurai warriors.

This mystical collection drives its inspiration from the crazy exceptional origami shapes. There is no denying that a huge part of the garments themselves look like origami.

It is Fall 2010 Couture and one of Galliano’s last shows for Dior. He might be arrogant and a little unorthodox but they say it is a thin line between genius and madness. And I dare say no one could argue that Galliano has a genius spark in him. In this collection he turns to nature and the models do look like fairies in the forest.

The vibrant colours and the floral elements make you feel like the models would spread their magical fairy wings any second and fly to consult mother nature.

MORE FROM DIOR: CHRISTIAN DIOR FALL 2014 RTW

This 2011 Collection is the first for Dior after Galliano and it is time for Bill Gaytten to shine. He manages to keep the magic alive with two major themes in the show. Here we see the first one – his interpretation of the clown but like everything couture it is extraordinary!

Here is the other theme – more down to earth folklore inspired looks!

Last stop before we move on is something more recent – Dior’s Couture from 2014. This time we are feeling a little cold but that’s okay, since we are looking at Snow Queen’s parade.

# Elie Saab Fashion Fairy tales

Our next destination is Elie Saab, although it may seem as an odd choice at first. His shows and designs are not so crazy elaborate and strongly themed as Dior’s. On the other hand, he can make no mistake when it comes to dressing a woman in a gown and making her feel like a part of a fairy tale. He is every woman’s modern Fairy God mother so to speak.

FOR ELIE SAAB LOVERS: ELIE SAAB AW 2014 COUTURE

It is 2003 and Saab is still exploring the designer role. However, his gipsy princess is beautifully interpreted.

A few years later, in a 2008 Couture Show he shows us his dark princess. And she is beautiful and elegant.

In 2010 Elie Saab explores his more gentle side, trying more pastel and tender colours. He is recreating a modern Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella and Bell dresses.

In 2011 Saab sticks with the pastel colours but he also drives inspiration from nature elements using floral prints as well as adding actual flower details.The result are his Forest Princesses.
