We all know it. We all wear it. Denim. But do you know how to wear denim dress? It’s not such a tricky part. It’s rather simple: you can wear denim from sport and casual to slightly edgy with a touch of elegance. I’m still trying to wrap my head around that denim could be worn to an elegant party. But I’m not quite sure that this can actually be possible. I think I’ll stick to my idea that denim is not the most appropriate fashion choice when it comes to extravagant events.

We’ll just have to wait and see what the future brings…

What Is Denim?

Over the years, denim became more than just a cotton fabric“Denim is one of the world’s oldest fabrics, yet it remains eternally young” states American Fabrics magazine, in 1969. That’s because, over the years, denim hasn’t gone once under the radar and off the runways. It was always present, one way or another. It was constantly used and designers have always shown interest in it because it’s a versatile fabric.

In its raw form, denim is rigid and has a more dark color (indigo). After being worn a couple of time, this fabric gives a more relaxing fit and comes to a faded color. But this takes some time. Modern industries have come up with several methods that speed up this process:

  • bleaching, acid, dyechemical treatment methods

  • stone wash, distressing, dirty wash, vintage – mechanical treatment methods

“From the 17th century to the present, denim has been woven, used and discarded; made into upholstery, pants, and awnings; found in museums, attics, antique stores and archaeological digs; worn as the fabric of hard honest work, and as the expression of angry rebellion; used for the sails of Columbus’ ships in legend; and worn by American cowboys in fact.” (A Short History Of Denim)

Why Do We Love Denim So Much?

We often wonder what to wear. And when I say “often”, I actually mean “a few times a day”. What’s the most simple answer that pops to our heads? Denim. A pair of denim trousers. Maybe a denim shirt, skirt or jacket. Sometimes even a denim dress. Why? The answer to this question is more than obvious.

Denim has no season. You can wear it in spring, summer, autumn and winter. It never gets old. However, our appreciation for denim is rather limited to mainly trousers. It’s the handiest fashion item we got and surely we’re not going to forget them so easily.

A denim dress is one of the many ways we can wear denim and not actually be trousers. A denim dress is a cool alternative to denim trousers and looks great if you accessorize it with sneakers, flat sandals, platform shoes, heels or boots.
