Thirty-year-old Alexander Wang has taken the fashion industry by storm. After studying at Parsons, New York’s prestigious fashion school, he created his own womenswear line in 2007 which he debuted at NYFW. His line was a success and paved the way for many other opportunities including winning the CFDA fashion fund to aid in developing his business.

Miley Cyrus, Beyonce and Rihanna are just a few of the starlets who have been seen in his phenomenal designers.

In 2013 Alexander Wang presented his A/W collection for Balenciaga having taken over the role from Nicholas Ghesquiere as creative director. Alexander is known for his urban yet relatable designs. In 2014, he was announced as the next designer to collaborate with high street store H&M.

Alexander famously uses the analogy of sitting at home wearing a sweatshirt. His brand and vision is based around taking that sweatshirt and creating it into something abstract which is why his brand is closely related to sportswear and comfort connotation.

Alexander’s AW14 runway exceeded all our expectations with a central focus on layering and exaggeration. He is famous for his overuse of black whilst incorporating other vivid, bright colours. This collection did not fall short of this.

Cape vs. Coat

AW14 is a debate. A debate surrounding capes and coats. Both chic, classy, sophisticated and fabulous. You may choose to buy both, but how do you decide which one to wear? When one of the worlds renown fashion designers is indecisive regarding this fashion ‘issue’ you know this is a debate that neither will win. What is your verdict darlings?

Casual trousers

Too often do we discuss dress, skirts, shorts and everything in between. Tailoring is central to many runway collections and is personally one of the main elements I look for in any catwalk creation. Alexander Wang, with his urban, iconic stance has demonstrated how trousers have the same effect as all the above. Laid back, cool and effortless many would think that trousers are too understated and too casual however Alexander Wang can ensure you this is not the case. Just look at those collection combinations.

Structure

Until now I have neglected the topic of location, but why? I wanted to show you how trends transition … I would say journey however Anna Wintour (AKA Queen of fashion) has just expressed her hatred for such a word. Structure immediately sparks imagery of office attire, the city girl and formality- very Upper East Side. Alexander’s AW14 show was held in Brooklyn to the shock of many FROW goers. Many would refrain from ever travelling to such a place that is a ‘world away’ from their high fashion expectations. The real question lies … how is Brooklyn of any contrast when the same fashion rules, pieces and trends are still present? You can never take the city out of the trend, but you can take the trend out the city.

Patterns and Prints

At the mere age of thirty Alexander Wang is already breaking all the rules of the fashion industry. It takes designers years and years to embrace risk but this young designer has Vogue and the CFDA on his side. I love his use of all over pattern and sharp prints but what mesmerised me even more is that the colour black is still dominant- Alexander’s signature.
